HIDDEN FIRE

HOW TO CREATE A COLORED STEREOVIEW SHOWING BURNING BUILDINGS

There was a Siege of Paris, lasting from September 19, 1870 to January 28, 1871. It brought French defeat in the “Franco-Prussian War”. A stipulation of the treaties was a German garrison to be left in Paris. This angered bitter Paris residents. Further resentment arose against the current French government. And from April to May 1871 Paris workers and National Guards rebelled and established what was called “The Paris Commune”.

An awfull lot of buildings were ruined during those years. And of course many photographs were taken!

To create a war-like atmosphere, later tissue stereoviews of the ruins were cut, colorized and turned into “surprise tissues”. We show you three examples.

Of course not only Parijs burns! Here you see a peaceful and quiet village. However, the church tower appears to be on fire, endangering the whole village.

Back to Paris. No rebellion problems. Just another “ordinairy” fire, so to speak. It’s “just a building” that is suddenly on fire.
