BEWARE OF THE PIRATES !
such as Josephus Albee, the Rochester Bookkeeper.
Every respected criminal has a Bookkeeper that discretely takes care of the company’s finances. This seems also the case with some stereoview pirates. And Josephus Albee was such a bookkeeper!
His name turns up around several Rochester view pirates.
The Union View Company was one of those pirates. It was managed by Louis R. Newman and Josephus Albee. This company was active in 1882 and 1883. Official papers say ”– a severe difference of opinion among the owners, arose which led to the regrettable dissolution of this very successful firm”. This probably means they hated each other’s guts.

After the Union View Company was “regrettably dissoluted”, mister Albee joined up with Charles R. Woodward. Albee became financial manager of the Woodward Stereoview Company, and a partner in “Woodward & Albee”. Both firms published an awful lot of pirated views, along with some originals.

In 1886 our Rochester Bookkeeper joined up with Charles R. Webster. Webster & Albee issued more than 3000 views! A mixture of original images, bought negatives and pirated views.
